Cons And Prices

2014 Honda CR-V

The Honda CR-V has been the best-selling compact crossover SUV in recent years for good reason ... in fact, there are a host of good reasons. It's comfortable, practical, reliable, fairly engaging to drive, gets good gas mileage, has a proven low cost of ownership and offers historically strong resale values.

This family-friendly vehicle just makes life easier with its easy-to-drive road manners, easy-to-load interior, easy-to-park size and easy-to-see-out visibility. It also offers two handles in the trunk that allow easily flipping the rear seat forward to accommodate those larger, bulky items that can often create storage headaches. And at a time when electronic feature interfaces seem to get more and more complicated each year, the 2014 CR-V's controls and gauges are simple to use and understand, while shunning trendy displays.

Model choices for consumers are fairly easy to select from as well because there is only one engine available and three trim levels. And options? They're super simple as well, consisting of only two offered on the top EX-L trim: navigation and a rear entertainment system.

Pros:

Simple and tasteful, outside and in
Cabin is comfortable, refined and quiet
   Excellent seat-folding mechanism
   Generous cargo and passenger room
   Good gas mileage
   User-friendly controls
   Plenty of standard tech features
   Strong crash-test scores

Cons:

Styling may seem a bit bland for some
   Perhaps too much interior plastic
   Steering feedback a little dull
   No engine upgrade available
The automatic transmission doesn't offer a manual mode
   No third row seat

Overall:

While the 2014 Honda CR-V may have some minor drawbacks for some, its positives are so weighty that we expect it to remain the top compact SUV choice available.

Other opinions:

From truedelta.com:

"But the CR-V has been so consistently among the most reliable models in the survey that this must be a key factor in decisions to buy one. None of the 50+ owners of the fourth-generation CR-V participating in the survey reported even a single minor repair during 2012"

From Edmunds.com:

"Roomy, fuel-efficient and loaded with family-friendly features, the 2014 Honda CR-V is our top choice among compact crossover SUVs."

From TheCarConnection.com:

"The 2014 Honda CR-V isn't exactly sprightly, but it nails efficiency on a few levels and finally brings more features to the family-wagon fight."

From Kelley Blue Book:

"Those needing the power of a V6 (for towing) or the convenience of a third-row seat won't be interested in the 2013 Honda CR-V. The Ford Escape and Hyundai Santa Fe offer more powerful engines with the same or better fuel economy as the CR-V."
